Cougar Town might not get a happy ending.
Earlier today ABC announced its midseason premiere dates with the Courteney Cox series notably absent from the list. Now comes word that the comedy’s episode order has been reduced from 22 to 15 half hours this season.
ABC has been fortunate enough to have launched a couple successful new comedies in the fall, with Suburgatory doing really well and Last Man Standing performing okay. The bigger surprise has been last season’s midseason effort Happy Endings, which grew into a solid partner for Modern Family — in Cougar Town‘s 9:30 p.m. slot.Insiders say the reduction is all about managing their inventory needs, and not a slight against the show, and it’s true enough that if Cougar Town performs strong for its 15 episode order when it finally does return sometime this season, ABC wouldn’t be shy about ordering more. So, a bummer for fans, but not a death sentence.
Courteney Cox, Brian Van Holt, and Sarah Chalke film beach scenes for the hit show “Cougar Town” in Malibu. During the filming of the beach scenes, an intimate kiss is exchanged between Brian Van Holt, and Sarah Chalke. Chalke, star of the TV show “Scrubs”, has signed a multi-episode storyline and is rumored to play a professor who falls in love with Holt’s character Bobby.

All work and no play can make anyone a dull girl, but thankfully Courteney Cox doesn’t have that problem. The 47-year-old actress combined both when she rode a WaveRunner while shooting scenes for her sitcom Cougar Town on a Malibu beach.
True to her acting skills, the star seemed like a consummate professional as she took a spin on the machine wearing a tight-fitting black wetsuit. Although she didn’t navigate the WaveRunner herself, she did hold on tight to the operator in front of her. However, her smile was at its widest as soon as she set foot back on shore and stripped down to the first layer of her water gear.

Cougar Town won’t be back until midseason, but its stars will be everywhere this fall.
In an unusual spectacle of stunt casting, Courteney Cox and her co-stars on the third-season ABC comedy will pop up in background roles on more than a dozen shows across several networks before its season premiere early next year.
Ian Gomez is scheduled to kick things off as a doctor on tonight’s Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 9 ET/PT), followed by Cox and Christa Miller as a lesbian couple at a fertility clinic on Private Practice (ABC, 10 ET/PT).
With so many entertainment choices these days and network promotional budgets often focused on just a few programs, shows have to find ways to market themselves, executive producer Bill Lawrence says. Since Cougar Town isn’t on the air now, “we decided it might be funny to say our cast is going to be on in the fall more than any other cast.”
Cox is game for the gimmick: “I thought it was hysterical. Bill and the writers have always been great about figuring out ways to keep people aware of our show even when we’re not on TV.”
Almost all the roles are designed to be uncredited, non-speaking appearances for a cast that also includes Dan Byrd, Josh Hopkins, Busy Philipps and Brian Van Holt. To date, 13 shows are on board, says Lawrence, who hopes eventually to have more than 20. Series include:
•ABC:Body of Proof,Castle,Dancing With the Stars,Man Up! and The Middle
•CBS:How I Met Your Mother
•Nick Jr.:Yo Gabba Gabba!
NBC’s Parenthood and CBS’ 2 Broke Girls are also likely.
In return, Cougar Town’s writers and actors, some of whom have thousands of Twitter followers, will tweet to promote their appearances.
Lining up appearances on other programs, especially on competing networks, can be tricky, but relationships forged by Lawrence, Cox and others over their years in the business reaped rewards. The Mother role is reciprocation of sorts for when Scrubs creator Lawrence allowed star Sarah Chalke to appear on the CBS show, he says.
“The fun thing is that if you can get to this point, the idea behind it, as writers and creators, is that we can help each other out,” Lawrence says.
Lawrence is no stranger to guerrilla marketing. Cougar and Scrubs cast and writers produced videos and interactive promo material; Cougar and NBC’s Community have traded shoutouts. “Hopefully, it will be kind of a game for our fans and remind people we’re still around and coming back soon enough,” he says.
Courteney Cox plays a woman in her forties who’s taking on new life challenges on ABC’s Cougar Town and now the actress is taking a page out of her character’s book.
An ABC spokesperson confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that the actress “is currently scheduled to direct an upcoming episode” of the sitcom during Season 3, as first reported by TVGuide.com.
This would be the 47 year old’s first time directing for television. Previously, Cox directed a short film called The Monday Before Thanksgiving in 2008, which she also appeared in, starring Laura Dern.
Cox plays Jules on the ABC sitcom and she serves as an executive producer. The series is set to return in the midseason. In the meantime, she’ll be guest starring on former Friends cast mate Lisa Kudrow’s Showtime series, Web Therapy, next month.
