Courteney Cox as a woman contemplating a sexless existence is a stretch of the imagination. And yet, in her new series Cougar Town where she plays a recent divorcee, Cox’s character is so worried about having to navigate the dating terrain once again, everything she does, she does with desperation.
As Jules Cobb, an estate agent in Florida, Cox disrobes frequently, dates younger men and is caught performing a sexual manoeuvre on a chap closer to her teenage son’s age than hers.
It’s Cox’s first comedy series since Friends, and it’s fair to say anyone hoping for a re-run of her prissy alter ego Monica Geller may be in for a shock.
The show initially aired in the U.S. last year to mixed reviews. Some praised the frantic pace of the action, while others wondered why Cox was playing a woman with dating problems.
But as Cox, 45, says: ‘I love playing Jules and the show says what I actually think.’
She’s been married to actor David Arquette for ten years, and has a five-year-old daughter Coco, so it’s not immediately evident how she could bear resemblance to her Cougar Town counterpart.
Grabbing at sexual opportunities, Jules finds herself thrust into situations of varying degrees of embarrassment, all observed by her friends, her ex-husband and their 17-year-old son.
Cox imbues her character with a great deal of warmth. ‘What I love about this character is everything’s real,’ she says. ‘At one point she says that all the men out there are either broken, gay or getting younger girls. It would be really scary if I had to go back out there again. It’s hard. Getting older is hard anyway.’
When you look like Cox of course, things do become easier. She is candid about the use of Botox and the worries that beset actresses in Hollywood, although in a pink Marc Jacobs top and a leather skirt, she is trim, toned and perky.
For a woman who once confessed that she was ‘already worried about getting older when I was 30′, she doesn’t look like someone who has an awful lot to be scared about.
‘I am just really well lit,’ she laughs. ‘Trust me, people don’t look the way they do on television in real life.’
In this week’s opening scene, Jules examined her naked body in the mirror for signs of ageing.
Cox’s own crisis occurred in a somewhat different form. ‘When I turned 40, I was lying in bed with my daughter,’ she says. ‘I had given birth two days before, so was thinking: “Oh my God, how am I going to give this back to someone?” Turning 40 is hard for women, but I was fine in the end.’
Much has been made of Cougar Town’s title, which makes reference to women of a certain age whose intent it is to pursue much younger men.
Cox, however, has little problem with the title, for, as she says: ‘I’ve been blazing that trail for 10 years now. My husband David is much younger than me (there is a seven-year age gap between them) and I think it’s great to be a cougar.’
As Cougar Town has been renewed for a second season there has been speculation over which stars will make guest appearances – hopes are high that quintessential cougar Jennifer Aniston may.
‘Jennifer loves the show,’ says Cox, ‘I’m sure she’d be glad to do it.’

Courteney Cox is a lot younger than most of her husband’s ex-lovers.
The 45-year-old actress says David Arquette – who, at 38, is seven years younger than her – has always adored older women and most of his previous partners were a lot older than she is.
Discussing what her husband thinks about her being a “cougar” she explained:
“He loves it! Let me tell you, I’m young compared to some people he’s dated – he likes older women. Always has.
“I don’t have a problem with cougars. My husband David is much younger than me, so I’ve been blazing that trail for over 10 years. To me, it’s just someone who dates younger men, so who cares?”
‘Cougar Town’ star Courteney – who has five-year-old daughter Coco with her husband – believes a lot of men are attracted to older women because they know what they want and don’t play mind games. She added to Stylist magazine:
“I used to think a cougar was a woman who had lots of plastic surgery, who was trying to look younger, and dating what she thought was her contemporary even though she was so much older. Now I just think it’s a woman who’s confident, who uses her confidence to dateyounger guys. There are a lot of men who actually are more attracted to older women because there’s no game-playing. I know that’s true of my husband.”
While Courteney doesn’t mind getting older, she doesn’t think this would be the case if she was single.
I am happy being 45. I’m lucky, I’m married to someone who is not judgmental about aging at all. But it would be really scary if I wasn’t married and had to go back out there.”
That’s the truth! Hitting milestones don’t bother me one bit. However, I have single friends who are not in serious relationships and are starting to get concerned with their age and status. It all depends where you are in your life. Was 30 hard for you? 40?
Zac Efron has many female admirers, and it seems he can now add Courteney Cox to the list.
She’s revealed he’d be the ‘perfect prey’ for a cougar crush.
Zac Efron Talking to Now magazine, the former Friends star said: ”Zac Efron would be perfect, but he probably has too much confidence to be real prey for a cougar.
“You know you’re a cougar when you’re attracted to your son’s friends.”
She also talked about ageing, saying: ”I don’t think ageing is great – I’m not having a ball with it. I’m a pretty self-critical person.
“If it’s not one thing I’m obsessed with, it’s another.”

Feeding America’s David Arquette and Courteney Cox are joining the National Association of Letter Carriers in their annual fight to Stamp Out Hunger across America on Saturday, May 8th.

Now in its 18th year, Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. With help needed now more than ever before, drive organizers hope to exceed last year’s record-setting total of 73.4 million pounds of donated food, as well as surpass one billion pounds of food collected over the history of the effort.
Members of Feeding America’s Entertainment Council, Arquette and Cox are supporting the letter carriers by appearing together in radio and print public service announcements. Both promote the campaign and urge Americans to help their neighbors in need by simply leaving a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 8.
Arquette, the chairman of Feeding America’s entertainment council, also is appearing in a television public service announcement and an online video which was posted today to the drive’s YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/StampOutHunger2010) as well as its Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/StampOutHunger) where each new fan results in a one can of soup donation from Campbell Soup Company to Feeding America (up to one million cans).
“More than 49 million Americans live at risk of hunger, so please join me, Courteney and millions of other generous Americans on Saturday, May 8 by placing a non-perishable food donation next to your mailbox to help the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger,” said Arquette.
The actress explained that she loves filming sex scenes for the show, The People reports.
“I’m pretty dirty, so I love pushing it to that limit,” she said. “There’s a part when my son walks in on me when I’m with this younger man, and that’s happened to a friend of mine. She pretended to be like, ‘Oh, there you are’.”
Cox added that the conversations her character has in the show are realistic.
“This is just girls talking, real-life stuff,” she explained. “My friend Christa Miller who is in Cougar Town was over last night and our conversations were a thousand times worse than the ones we have on the show.”
She continued: “I think it’s important to be relevant and real and I like to push things, but I’m surprised what we’ve got away with. And I hope it stays that way.”
